Disability Inclusion Workshop, Jeypore, Odisha

Engage Disability organised a Disability inclusion workshop for faith leaders, youth and women leaders in Jeypore, Odisha on 6 June 2025. We are grateful to Rt Rev Bidhan Kumar Nayak of the JELC who inaugurated the workshop, and Bishop Immanuel Dani of CNI Sambalpur who personally took interest in ensuring his Diocese delegates arrived and participated.

Saroj Naik a person with visual impairment shared poignantly his experiences of discrimination, neglect and exclusion from faith spaces. Alisha Patro a young woman with locomotor Disability and an aspiring IAS officer preparing for UPSC shared with strength and clarity both about experiencing attitudinal barriers, and also about how her church has embraced her and given her the space to contribute. As always this was the highlight of the day as the rest of the participants were convicted about the failure of faith spaces to be spaces that include and welcome everyone.

Youth from the JELC who attended expressed that they found the session on “disability etiquette” very enlightening and life changing in their perspective about how to understand disability and perceive people with disabilities.
We had a total of 40 and eighty percent of them travelled quite a distance from Jeypore, from different smaller towns around Jeypore from the Jeypore Evangelical Lutheran Church and some from the CNI Sambalpur Diocese from Bolangir. We had almost 15 ordained women from JELC thanks to the key organiser, Rev Kuntala Naik the Women’s Secretary of JELC. Both the JELC and CNI Sambalpur Diocese have made plans of action for focused activities in their respective Churches to be carried out in the next six months.

It was a very encouraging and fruitful workshop. We are hopeful to have an ED hub blossoming in Jeypore and the one in Bolangir being revived as outcomes of this workshop. Our special thanks to the Jeypore Evangelical Lutheran Church and the CNI Diocese of Sambalpur for the success of this workshop.
